The 2.5 day UK Mountain Bike Trail Leader course in West Sussex (offered in partnership with Cycling UK) is designed to enable leaders to take groups of mountain bikers on off-road gentle terrain. 

The course will equip leaders to:
  •  Lead groups of adults, young people and children on rides
  • Manage groups with a range of riding experience
  • Prepare for  rides, anticipate and minimise safety factors
  • Develop and apply risk assessments, operating procedures and dynamic risk management
  • Provide fun, engaging and developmental sessions for your participants
  • Understand access rights across the UK and beyond
  • Complete and review rides, using self-reflective principles

Pre-Requisites

  • At least one year’s experience of regular riding in easy off-road terrain – a minimum of 30 rides
  •  Comfortably ride in Red Terrain
  • Have ridden in poor weather
  • Logbook of rides
  • Ability to ride 16km in Off Road terrain
  • 16 Hour Outdoor First Aid Course (such as the ECP Exploration course)
  • Minimum age 18
  • Non-technical riding – relatively smooth tracks and trails
  • A valid first aid certificate 


Course Schedule

Day One, 18:00 - 20:00 (Theory only, includes kit check)

During the evening session your instructor will introduce you to the main elements of the course and will take you through the pre-course preparations and risk assessments with a view to a prompt start the next morning. 


Day Two, am -20:00 (Theory and Practical)

During your first practical day, your instructor will take you through best practise examples for a wide variety of groups, environments and conditions.


Day Three, 09:00 - 16:00 (Theory and Practical)

During your final session your instructor will explain practical implementation of leading techniques, in addition to scenario skills. You will each have the opportunity to lead the group whilst being assessed by the leader.


Equipment

You will need to provide your own personal equipment (Mountain bike, helmet, repair kit etc.)
